Auxiliaries – Primary Auxiliaries and Modal Auxiliaries

Auxiliaries are of two types: 

1. Primary auxiliaries 

2. Modal Auxiliaries

■ Primary Auxiliary can be used alone and independently. 

Example : This is a table. ( here ‘is’ is used independently without any help of the main verb )

■ Primary auxiliaries: 

》am, is , are  ( present time )

》 was , were ( past time )

☆ Am, is , are , was , were 》 these are called BE VERBS.

》 Have, Has ( present time )

》 Had ( past times )

USE OF PRIMARY AUXILIARIES ☆☆☆☆☆

● AM 》 First person singular number pronoun – I

● IS 》Third person Singular Number pronouns & Nouns :  HE, SHE, IT, Name 

● ARE 》 Plural Number pronouns & Nouns: WE, YOU, THEY

● WAS 》 Singular Number pronoun & Nouns : I, HE, SHE, IT

● WERE 》 Plural Number pronouns & nouns : WE, YOU, THEY

● HAVE 》First Person Pronouns, Second Person Pronoun, Third Person Plural Number  : I, WE, YOU, THEY

● HAS 》》Third person Singular Number pronouns & Nouns : HE , SHE , IT,  NAME

● HAD 》 All Nouns and Pronouns

■ EXERCISE:

1. am / is/ are 》

I ____ travelling to Kolkata. 

He ___ good student.

They ___ villagers

You ___ all right.

She ___ brilliant .

2. Was / were 》

They ___ rich people. 

He ___ poor once.

You ____ not like this before .

She ____ a dancer.

3. HAS / HAVE 》

He ___ a little brother. 

They ____ a beautiful garden. 

The company ___ a reputation. 

I ____ a parrot. 

You ____ always wanted it. 

She ____ many questions .

It ____ got cold.

■ Modal Verbs :

■ Modal auxiliaries are always used in sentences along with main Verb. It can’t be used alone and independently. 

Example : I can play the piano. ( Here, ‘can’ is used along with the verb play. )
